Man arrested for assault while driving car at Carlsbad mall: police

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A 19-year-old man who allegedly rammed a car into groups of pedestrians during a brawl at a Carlsbad mall last weekend was behind bars on Thursday on suspicion of assault and attempted murder , authorities said.

Detectives arrested John Jason Gutierrez Martinez of Spokane, Wash., at a motel in Escondido on Tuesday, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

Martinez allegedly entered his vehicle during an argument in a parking lot at the Village Faire shopping center in the 300 block of Carlsbad Village Drive and drove him into a group of pedestrians shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, CPD Sgt. said Jim Willis.

He then allegedly put the car in reverse and backed into another group of people before driving off.

Four people were treated in hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the alleged assault on the vehicle.

The cause of the scuffle between the suspect and others at the mall remains unclear, Willis said.
Martinez was incarcerated in Vista County Jail, where he was being held without bail pending trial.
