Lacrosse Unlimited opens at Linworth Mall

A new lacrosse shop hopes to capitalize on the sport’s popularity in central Ohio.

On September 6, Lacrosse Unlimited opened an approximately 1,800 square foot store at 2245 W. Dublin-Granville Road in the Linworth Shopping Centre.

Founded in 1990 by the DeSimone family and based in Edgewood, New York, Lacrosse Unlimited has more than 45 stores in 14 states, according to the company.

The last company, however, is the only Lacrosse Unlimited in Ohio.

Store manager Ross LaPerna said he and the company have been working on opening another Central Ohio store since the Upper Arlington operation closed in 2016.

“Just as the game and player skills have grown in central Ohio and the Midwest, we have grown and matured as a company,” LaPerna said. “We have learned from the lessons of the past, good and bad, and are confident in our ability to exceed market expectations. We are delighted to be back.

“The Midwest is smoking hot in lacrosse right now. Teams (in the Midwest) compete nationally every year. Players here compete all over the country year-round. There’s a huge population of players in central Ohio.”

Despite Upper Arlington’s closure, LaPerna said, the time had come for Lacrosse Unlimited to return to central Ohio.

“Just as the game and player skills have grown in central Ohio and the Midwest, we have grown and matured as a company,” he said. “We have learned from the lessons of the past, good and bad, and are confident in our ability to exceed market expectations. We are delighted to be back.”

LaPerna said he can outfit lacrosse players from toe cleats to head-mounted helmets and also provide all the other game gear the game needs.

If something isn’t in stock, LaPerna said, items can be picked up from another Lacrosse Unlimited store.

“It’s lacrosse,” he said. “We have equipment for players who can’t spell lacrosse because they’re too young, all the way up to Division I players in college.

“We can outfit anyone, and we do everything.”

One of the store’s first customers, Antonio Benton from Dublin, said he was delighted when he saw discussions on social media about the store.

Her excitement intensified after she started browsing the store’s selection online and discovered it had a lot to offer her daughter, Megan, a freshman at Olentangy Liberty.

“What caught my eye was he had a whole wall of girly stuff,” Benton said. “A lot of places have stuff for boys but not a lot of stuff for girls.”

Benton said LaPerna opened the store early for him so he could buy a Gait Apex lacrosse stick his daughter had been looking for all summer.

“She asked (LaPerna) if he could change the strings to the Olentangy Liberty colors, and he was like, ‘Oh yeah,'” Benton said. “In less than 24 hours, it was ready.

“Having this kind of selection within 15 minutes of my house is huge. Having girls and other kids working in the store who know the game is also helpful. I will definitely be going back.”

Initially, Lacrosse Unlimited plans to maintain seven employees, some of whom play collegiately. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“I tell people this is the barber shop for lacrosse,” LaPerna said. “People come and want to come out and talk about lacrosse.

“We have over 45 stores (company-wide), but…we’re the only ones in the Midwest. So that’s a destination.”
