“Hazmat Situation” at the N. Utica Mall

UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – An accident at the North Utica Mall involving a tanker truck has caused a serious hazmat situation and closed the mall itself, Leland Ave and I-790 West until at new order.

A tanker truck containing diesel fuel broke down and disconnected from the cab on the I-790 on-ramp behind the mall.

Members of the Utica Police Department, local hazardous materials response personnel and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation evacuated the entire mall, including Price Chopper, as well as Biglots Square .

Leland Ave westbound, Herkimer Rd westbound and I-790 Eastbound from the North Genesee St ramp are closed until further notice. The UPD is asking anyone needing access to Herkimer Road to do so from Dyke Road in the town of Schuyler.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

Authorities say there may be an odor in the air, but it’s not harmful at this time.

The investigation is still ongoing and the cause of the accident is still unknown. Eyewitness News will continue to update this story with new information as it is published.
