This week on “Urban Spelunking” we visit the former Schuster department store and the current Marcia P. Coggs Human Services Center near 12th and Vliet.
The building at 1220 W. Vliet St. dates back to 1910 and is home to an array of state and local direct service organizations, including the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Wisconsin State’s Milwaukee registration and restaurant. bank on the lower level.
In this week’s episode, we talk about the state agencies that will soon leave the site and the outlook for this building, which will remain largely empty. What are we going to do with space? Will it be demolished?
We also take a look around the site, including the basement, for clues from the department store era. While most of his past has been erased, OnMilwakuee’s Bobby Tanzilo found a few remnants, including this neat color-coded display on the wall, presumably reserved for the eyes of employees.
Listen to this week’s episode and be sure to visit OnMilwaukee for more story and photos.
