Criminal convicted of carjacking and shooting in West Valley mall

GLENDALE, Ariz. (3TV/CBS 5) — Federal authorities have released the name of the suspect who allegedly hijacked and shot a man outside a West Valley mall. It happened on August 8 at the Peoria Crossing Mall on 91st and North Avenues near the 101 loop.

According to a Department of Justice statement, 19-year-old Adonijah Josiah Ortega drove into the target’s parking lot around 11:30 a.m. when he approached the victim pointing a handgun. At that time, Ortega allegedly asked for the keys to the man’s car and his wallet. Although it was initially reported that he was shot in the leg, authorities say he was shot several times in the head. Ortega then took off. The victim was taken to the local hospital with a gunshot wound and multiple cuts to the head. An updated status on the victim’s condition has not been released.

Authorities have previously said they believe the crime was random and the two men did not know each other.

Phoenix police have located an SUV that was stolen in a carjacking and shooting Monday at a West Valley mall.

Phoenix police found the stolen SUV the next day in a Dunlap neighborhood north of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Video from the scene showed that the driver’s side front tire was flat and no one was inside. And on Friday, Ortega was charged with carjacking and a weapons charge in addition to possession of a firearm by a felon.
